A day out with the little ones is easy!

This summer, families in Catalonia with children under the age of three will find it even easier to enjoy a day outdoors, take part in a cultural visit or participate in leisure activities. Both companies and tourist offices offer all kinds of facilities: bicycle seats, specific activities and services such as Baby Clubs so that the little ones are well taken care of and can have fun with the whole family.

Baby Clubs on the beach

All along the Catalan coast, families can use the mini clubs on the beach that include services for children from 0 to 3 years old, called Baby Clubs. They are a very useful option for families as they offer amenities to make a day by the sea easy. Changing facilities, highchairs, microwaves, fridges, hand wash basins, cots, nursing sofas, story reading and even indoor spaces with air conditioning and an area to leave prams. Babies must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

If families have children of various ages, this space, together with the mini clubs for boys and girls aged 3 to 12, is very useful. The little ones are in an enclosed space where they can do various activities such as workshops, foam parties, adapted games, etc., all under the supervision of monitors who guarantee their safety.

Some of the Baby Clubs you’ll find on the Costa Brava are those in Roses, Torroella de Montgrí-l’Estartit and Lloret de Mar. On the Costa Barcelona, your little ones can have fun at the beaches of Santa Susanna and Pineda de Mar and on the Costa Daurada at beaches such as Salou. In some municipalities, such as Platja d’Aro, a Family Club space has been created, one where the whole family can take part in joint activities such as craft workshops, theatre, etc. Baby Clubs are free and open from 10am to 1pm and from 5pm to 7pm. Usually a reservation should be made, as capacity is limited.

Climate refuges: educational afternoons, an alternative to the heat

The municipal libraries on the coast become a fantastic alternative for families during the summer. They can enjoy reading together and take part in entertaining activities while staying cool.

These facilities organise activities for your little ones, such as story time in Roses, to promote reading among children. There are also reading workshops in Santa Susanna. If you’d like to enjoy culture by the sea, libraries like the one in Castelldefels move to the beach! At the Biblioplatja, boys and girls, in addition to enjoying reading, can also do crafts and experiments. They even schedule magic shows!

Cable cars, carriages and bicycles: enjoy the landscape from the comfort of your seat

Outings and excursions with the little ones are easier if you can keep them under control and entertained at the same time. If you visit the Pyrenees of Catalonia this summer, some high-altitude days out await you, where you can enjoy the mountain scenery while comfortably seated.

At Vallter2000, in Vall de Camprodon, the panoramic chairlift will take you to the highest point of the resort, at 2,535 metres above sea level, where you can take in the source of the Ter river and enjoy the landscape of the Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser Natural Park

In Vall de Núria, the adventure begins with the zip line and then a climb to the Coma de Clot cable car that will take you to the Alberg del Pic de l’Àliga, located at 2,170 metres high.

The Cadí-Moixeró cable car, located at La Molina ski resort, offers you a journey through the sky that reaches the Niu de l’Àliga refuge and the Tosa peak, at 2,537 metres above sea level.

In Torroella de Montgrí-l’Estartit you can enjoy an outing in a horse-drawn carriage. Your children will feel like they’re in a Western film, and for the parents it is the perfect way to explore the Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter Natural Park in peace, a natural area protected from the Costa Brava.

Walking the Green Way of the Terra Alta is another excursion that you can do with the children, while enjoying all the facilities. This route traces the old railway route that connected Puebla de Híjar (Aragon) and Tortosa. It is very easy and enjoyable as it passes through several tunnels and viaducts and runs alongside the Canaleta river. To do the section that starts in Horta de Sant Joan and goes to Pinell de Brai, the company Esgambi offers families with children aged 0 to 3 years more convenient and comfortable walking bikes without gears, and also highchairs, two-seater trailers to attach to bicycles, among other accessories.

Companies such as Montsport, Deltacleta and Via Verda Esports also offer services adapted to families for bicycle trips.

Parks to enjoy the summer outdoors

Before or after a day at the beach, a lunch or a walk along the circular path, the park is a fantastic addition to any activity. With the heat of summer, it is best to look for green spaces where you can enjoy the coolness. In Cambrils, you can visit the Samà park, a botanical garden where you can spend a day in the shade discovering plant species from all over the world. As well as this, you can also have a picnic, play and walk among the big trees by the lake.

The Francesc Macià play park in Malgrat de Mar is another easily accessible place to enjoy a morning or afternoon of games. It is full of giant figures from traditional children’s stories, or others like a piece of cake or a giant eraser. Here children can jump and climb and there is also a space for skateboards, a children’s play area and a picnic area. It is an enclosed park that guarantees the safety of the children and has free entry.

At the Estanys park in Castell-Platja d’Aro you can have a go at ornithology as a family! Here you can observe up to 250 different species of birds, both those that live permanently in the area and those that stay there during migration. The park has a large pond, flat paths to walk along with a pram, and also several viewpoints from which to observe the birds, with informative panels and educational routes to enjoy with children.

In Torroella de Montgrí-l’Estartit you can go and explore Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter Natural Park either with a flat walking route to the castle or on an excursion to the Pletera, a wetland where you can see up to 80 different species of birds. Throughout the year, the park organises guided trips to discover natural and cultural heritage, workshops, bicycle and kayaking expeditions.
