The Water Lady of Santa Susanna
The water ladies, also known as the enchanted or fairies, are creatures from Catalan mythology who lived in streams, pools, waterfalls and lakes, and they guarded all the water of the forests. One of them lived in the Can Ratés pond. According to legend, the water ladies permeated nature with their elegance and beauty, adding a sense of grace to the surroundings. When the good weather arrived, they would weave out the springtime. They sewed up sturdy branches and deep roots of trees, dispersed seeds and made flowers bloom. However, they could never be disturbed when they were working. If someone dared to disturb them, they could end up plunging into the fountain of oblivion, where they would lose their memory, or turn into a stone for a period of time. If you go near Can Ratés, you might see them busying themselves around the pond, but don’t distract them… or you know where you’ll end up!
