The Water Fairies of Roses
The water fairies, a type of mermaid or lady of the water, are the protagonists of this story that takes us to the Bay of Roses. Tired of seducing the sailors, they went to live on land, in a place called Les Coves de les Encantades, or the Cove of the Water Fairies, right at the foot of the Serra de Rodes. They often spent their time bewitching the parishioners who attended mass in the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes with their tempting songs and laughter. One day, some naughty children who were walking through the woods secretly removed the veil from a water fairy, since in those days it was believed that whoever removed the veil from a mermaid would have good fortune. When she realised, she became very angry and glared at them, turning them into two rocks that lie on the seashore and which today are known as Els Fadrins Encantats, in Cap de Norfeu.
