The sky: the best place in Catalonia to watch the stars

The Montsec Astronomical Park is the best window in Catalonia to observe the stars. Do you know why? It is considered the Starlight Reserve by the Starlight Foundation, endorsed by the UNESCO. The sky has very low light pollution levels and ideal darkness conditions. Are you ready to see one of the best skies in the world for star gazing?

Your eyes will be fixed on the sky but you can’t miss seeing your partner’s reaction. He/she’ll be speechless when the dome of the Montsec Astronomical Park opens and before his/her eyes is one of the most spectacular, starry skies in the world.

Gastronomical stop at the Hotel Terradets

This happens at night, but the morning will begin with the arrival at the Terradets Gastronomic Hotel, located at the foot of the Montsec Mountains and Lake Terradets. You can spend a relaxing afternoon here, in a place where the surroundings invite you to forget about the world, until dinner time. You have a reservation at the restaurant Cal Maciarol, which offers traditional, home cooked food from the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida made with local products.

Travel to the past

The title for the second day could be: historical day in Os de Balaguer. If you’ve spent the night among constellations and planets, now it’s time for a flash from the past. The Monastery of the Avellanes is an ancient abbey of monks of the Order of Saint Augustus, located in Os de Balaguer. Here the time traveling begins and continues on the top of a hill above the town with a fortified castle. The day ends in one of the most original museums of the area: the Bell Museum. Here, they’ll explain the characteristics and the musical tones of the bells, how people learned the occupation and what it meant to the town.

Two days to discover the delicacies of the sky and earth in Montsec.

A different way to make wine

A different way to make wine

The singularity is the differentiating factor of the visit to the Castell d’Encús winery, DO Costers del Segre, located at almost 1,000 meters, on a sunny slope with views of the spectacular Sant Antoni Dam. You’ll walk through a woody area to one of the 8 fermentation mills that the Hospitaller sisters carved out of stone in the XII century. Of course, you’ll walk in their unique vineyards with different orientations and ten different grape varieties. The tasting held at the end of the experience is very unique because with glass in hand you’ll go down to the cellar to taste the wine and see the process of the vats and the barrels where the wine ages.

Discover La Noguera through its flavours

Discover La Noguera through its flavours

The kitchen is the basic starting point to promote a region's cuisine. This is what the Noguera Cuina collective has done, by highlighting the traditional cuisine of the Noguera region. The menus of eight of the region's restaurants include dishes made with local products from dry farming, fruit and olive oil of excellent quality, typical of the area. The nougat, cheeses and the honey—particularly the honey—are also very highly rated. It is worth visiting the Noguera region just to taste the honeyed lamb chops they make at the restaurant Casa Mercedes or the crème caramel at the restaurant Lo Ponts. Do you want to try them?

Flatbread with ratatouille

This is the most popular flatbread in the Catalan rural areas. In the old farm houses, families would reserve part of the bread dough to make this.

Break up the yeast with a little bit of warm water and add salt. Make a volcano shape with the flour and mix in the yeast. Work it until you have a smooth paste, cover it with a towel and let it rise until it doubles in size. Meanwhile, fry the onion and the tomatoes. When the dough has grown, stretch it lengthwise and give it a width of 15 to 20 cm. Place the fried onions and tomatoes on top along with the ratatouille. Add salt and the herrings with a splash of oil. To finish, bake the bread until it’s completely cooked.

  • 400 g of flour
  • 150 g of water
  • 20 g of compressed yeast
  • 10 g of salt
  • 4 chopped onions
  • 4 herrings
  • 3 grilled peppers
  • 2 grilled eggplants
  • 2 chopped, ripe tomatoes
  • Oil
  • Salt
