The Patum in Berga

Troupes, dance performances, fire and firecrackers take centre stage at the Patum in Berga. This traditional celebration started out in ancient medieval theatre performances and dates back more than five centuries.

The whole town gets involved in this festival with huge historical, cultural and heritage value and declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

It is officially opened on Corpus Christi Thursday in Plaça de Sant Pere with the beating of the drum. The Plens fire demons dance is the most thrilling and impressive moment of the festival and only takes place at night. The demons reach the main square laden with fire and everyone dances to the rhythm of the music.

In this great fire festival that lasts five days, the troupes of demons, guitas (a kind of dragon), eagles and other creatures call on the audience to dance accompanied by groups of giants and the nans vells (‘big-head’ figures wearing ancient costumes).

This celebration also features the Children’s Patum, a special event for kids.
