The DO Pla de Bages Wine Route

The DO Pla de Bages is a land of contrasts where the vineyards lie under the protection of the Montserrat mountain, an important symbol for the history, spirituality and Catalan culture. In fact, it is the designation of origin which is closest to this natural icon.

Located in an extremely beautiful and protected natural area, between the legendary Montserrat Mountains and the Castelltallat Range, the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural Park and the Montcau massif, the region invites visitors to enjoy various wine tourism attractions following the DO Pla de Bages Wine Route.

You can start this wine route at the Sant Benet de Bages Monastery, with documented vineyards dating back to the 10th century and a large Gothic wine cellar. The DO Pla de Bages Wine Route also includes cultural wine tourism experiences, activities, sports, bike rides and a “wine train”. The most adventurous will even be able to discover the vineyards from a bird’s eye view in a hot-air balloon, ultralight or two-seater paraglider, taking in the view of the spectacular north face of Montserrat.

An Exceptional Wine Heritage

Today, this small wine-growing region of Catalonia is home to great wines, an abundance of wine tourism and a unique wine heritage in Europe, which includes its unique dry-stone vats located next to the vineyards.

The dry-stone vats are the jewel in the crown of the various wine tourism attractions of the DO Pla de Bages and about 4,000 of them have been preserved. These vats were hut-like constructions that enabled farmers to take care of the vineyards and store the harvested grapes.
