Stage two: an explosion of nature in Sant Llorenç de Morunys

The first riddle of the Grand Tour of Catalonia leads Carles and Sofía to mountain ranges, forests and rivers, as far as the imposing turquoise reservoir of La Llosa del Cavall. They’re in Sant Llorenç de Morunys, a natural setting to be marvelled at with outstanding vantage points and baroque jewels as spectacular as the area itself. If you want to find out more about what’s to be seen here, read on.

Surrender to the beauty of baroque

There’s a place that must be visited before you head off towards the reservoir. It’s in Riner and it leaves anyone who stands before it speechless. We’re referring to the great golden altarpiece preserved in the Miracle Sanctuary. Dating back to the 18th century, this work of art comprises statues, plinths, altars and pillars adorned with garlands of flowers, fruits and foliage that are a feast for the eyes. This is just one example of the heritage preserved in the area which can still be enjoyed today.

A reservoir for lovers of adrenaline

La Llosa del Cavall will make your jaw drop when you see it for the first time, but the adventure sports you can enjoy on its waters are even more impressive. Kayaking is one of the most popular and it’s suitable for both beginners and experts. But if you prefer more extreme sensations, try the bungee jumping involving a 122-metre leap into the void with an elastic rope above the dam. Get ready for it, because it’s one of the highest in the world.

The valley from up on high

The vantage points over La Vall de Llord are renowned for their amazing views. One of the finest is located in La Creu del Codó and is 1,529 metres high. The views of Sant Llorenç de Morunys, the mountains surrounding it and the waters of the reservoir are worthy of a picture postcard. Another must-see is the Lord Sanctuary, a neoclassical church built on top of the rock known as La Mola de Lord. It not only offers views but also the opportunity to learn more about its historical past.
