Montserrat

Montserrat:
a spiritual
and cultural icon

Montserrat is the most iconic mountain in Catalonia. Located about an hour's drive from Barcelona, it is famous for its whimsical shapes, the result of a million-years geological and geomorphological process. It is also one of the spiritual symbols of Catalonia.

On the eastern side, at an altitude of more than 720 meters, there is a spectacular Benedictine monastery with a community of 80 monks who dedicate their lives to prayer, charity work and service. Each year, thousands of pilgrims from all over the world visit this religious icon that, throughout history, has played a major role as a cultural promotion center.

Another reason to come to Montserrat is its choir of boy singers. Listening to the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest such choirs in Europe, is a truly moving experience.

Wines on the slopes of Montserrat

The mountain slopes give rise to one of the regions with the biggest wine-growing tradition, the Designation of Origin (DO) Pla de Bages. Back in the tenth century, the monks of the Romanesque monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, founded in 972 by a small community of 12 Benedictine monks, produced wine. In this DO, a native grape variety is grown: the picapoll, grapes which give rise to bright and fruity yellow-colored wines.
